But say the word, and my servant will be healed. Lk 7:7

Surprising Faith

Nothing is more surprising than to see Jesus himself was surprised at the statement of faith - faith of a Roman officer who had concern for his sick servant. “Sir, don’t trouble yourself. I do not deserve to have you come into my house, neither do I consider myself worthy to come to you in person. Just give the order, and my servant will get well.” (Lk 7:6-7). What amazing faith that the centurion knew the accomplishing power of the Divine Word, “My word is like the snow and the rain that come down from the sky to water the earth. They make the crops grow and provide seed for planting and food to eat. So also will be the word that I speak—it will not fail to do what I plan for it; it will accomplish everything I send it to do.” (Is 55:10-11). The excellence of faith in Jesus, the Incarnate Word, who can send the healing word, did not demand of him, either the presence of Jesus at his house or himself coming in person to witness the miracle. For he had faith that does not need any proof, “To have faith is to be sure of the things we hope for, to be certain of the things we cannot see” (Heb 11:1). Let’s imitate the humble faith of this officer that compelled the release of a miracle for his servant.

Abba, thank you for setting before us models of faith. Let your Spirit inspire us and enkindle our faith, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Each new day, may this feeble faith of mine be transformed ever more fully into Your likeness, oh Lord, of faith with the power of the mighty mustard seed and the unbending fortitude of an oak*
