Honoring Humility
An advice that benefits us and honors God is shared by the philosopher with great wisdom for our advantage, “My child, be humble in everything you do, and people will appreciate it more than gifts. The greater you become, the more humble you should be; then the Lord will be pleased with you. The Lord's power is great, and he is honored by those who are humble” (Sirach 3:17-20). Paul too shares his insight and warning, for practical reasons, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves” (Phil 2:3). We may have everything that we are proud about - our knowledge, beauty, wealth and understanding; yet, we should remain humble, honoring God, “Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight” (1 Pet 3: 3-4). Everyday effort is necessary to radiate this shining character that is kept within us for the glory of God.
Abba, thank you for keeping your Son’s words and life as the best examples of humility. Let your Spirit enable us to remain humble, in Jesus’ Most Holy Name, Amen.
