Stillness is Essential
The mind that is clouded by confusions, fear, and worries cannot remain calm. Stillness is an essential condition to get light from God, and receive miracles from God, for David shares his revelation in the hymn, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth” (Ps 46:10). Calming down is God’s duty and has to be submitted to Him, for Christ demonstrated to strengthen the faith of the apostles, “He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Quiet! Be still!’ Then the wind died down and it was completely calm” (Mk 4:39). The apparent conditions, however loud and strong they may be, should not affect us, for we have a God who can visit us in stillness and requires our stillness, “And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake: and after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice” (1 Kings 19:11-12). Elijah, the great prophet, too, had fears, but God never abandoned him, for He is God who is the Deliverer. Standing still and calming down can be attained by our efforts and God’s assistance. Let’s practice this spiritual mystery by letting God to take the active role for our advantage.
Abba, thank you for calming us, and fighting for us. Let your Spirit give us peace and accompany us, in Jesus’ Most Mighty Name, Amen.
