Even the strongest army commander began his life as a child, no one can predict what a child might become, and why he or she is sent into our care by the Creator, and hence we have great duty toward them. The survival and meaningfulness of the earth, depend on the arrival of children, for that was the first blessing rewarded to the first family, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground” (Gen 1:28). King David realised this mystery and declared the importance of keeping it in our lives, “Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate” (Ps 127:3-5). Children, not only make our lives meaningful, but they are kept here as examples to be imitated, if we want to inherit the heavenly life, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven” (Mt 18:3). Let’s honour and protect our children, for they are great treasures that God has sent with the definite purpose.

Abba, thank you for the children around us, whoever they may be. Let your Spirit give us wisdom to extend honour and protection, for that is their timely need. In Jesus’ Most Holy Name, Amen.
