Simon Peter said to the others, “I am going fishing.” “We will come with you,” they told him. Jn 21:3

Fishers of Men

The ordinary fishermen, who cannot even catch fish, were entrusted with the duty of being fishers of men, by a miracle that astonished them and made them leave everything and follow Christ: “When he finished speaking, he said to Simon, ‘Push the boat out further to the deep water, and you and your partners let down your nets for a catch.’” (Lk 5:4). After having a big catch, they followed Him, until they could not comprehend the mystery of salvation that He had to perform - which involved great passion; and hence they feared and hid themselves, but He reassured; still they almost gave up, “Simon Peter said to the others, ‘I am going fishing.’ ‘We will come with you,’ they told him. So they went out in a boat, but all that night they did not catch a thing” (Jn 21:3). But Jesus once again reinstated them in His ministry by performing the same miracle that made their original commitment, “He said to them, ‘Throw your net out on the right side of the boat, and you will catch some.’ So they threw the net out and could not pull it back in, because they had caught so many fish” (Jn 21:6). Let’s believe in the glorious vocation to be partners in Christ’s ministry and celebrate the gift of vocation.

Abba, thank You for keeping unworthy people as partners in Your Son’s mission. Let Your Spirit strengthen our spirit that we may remain committed, in Jesus’ Most Holy Name, Amen.
