The Holy Baptism
The great commandment of Christ consists in baptising His Father’s children into His Kingdom: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Mt 28:19). Coming from Galilee to Jordan, to be baptised by John, Jesus was deterred by the baptist, but received His own baptism: “But John tried to deter him, saying, ‘I need to be baptised by you, and do you come to me?’ Jesus replied, ‘Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfil all righteousness.’ Then John consented. As soon as Jesus was baptised, he went up out of the water” (Mt 3:14-16). The chief apostle, on his first preaching, after receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit, extended an invitation, “Peter replied, ‘Repent and be baptised, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38-39), that attracted three thousand new believers, who accepted his faith and holy baptism that was proclaimed. Let’s celebrate the day of baptism, for that is when we become God’s children, and our inheritance is huge, through that activity.
Abba, thank You for reaching out to baptise us, that we may become Your children. Let Your Spirit anoint us, and live in us, in Jesus’ Most Powerful Name, Amen.
