Condition to Shepherd
It is not the desire to serve, or the knowledge of the scriptures, or the the number of years we spent in the formation in the seminary that qualifies us to be the shepherd of God’s flock. Jesus’ question to Simon Peter reveals that love for Christ is the basis and condition required for being the shepherd: “After they had eaten, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me more than these others do?’” (Jn 21:15). Not knowing the intention of the inquiry, Peter spontaneously responded about the love he had for his Master: “‘Yes, Lord,’ he answered, ‘you know that I love you.’” (Jn 21:15) The immediate response of Jesus is astonishing, that He entrusts Peter with the greatest responsibility of caring for the lambs: “Jesus said to him, ‘Take care of my lambs.’” (Jn 21:15) If we desire to serve God and be His desired shepherd, then let our hearts be filled with love for Christ.
Abba, thank You for inspiring us to be filled with the love for Christ. Let Your Spirit enable us to be the caretakers of Your flock, in Jesus’ Most Loving Name, Amen.
