Rebuke and Heal
Nobody wants anyone to be sick; God neither. And that is why a clear warning was given to the first parents, not to consume the fruit of the forbidden tree, that would enslave them to the enemy and make them fall into sin, sicknesses, and the ultimate sickness called death. Negligence of God’s word, false ambitions, and yielding to the seductive lure of temptation, made the mankind easy victims to various sicknesses. Though it can be taken as a punishment against the disobedience of the law, God who is exceedingly compassionate made provision for healing by His Son’s sacrifice of the precious blood. After His baptism, having won over the temptation, Jesus declared the purpose of His arrival in the synagogue as: “He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free.” (Lk 4:18) Immediately after this episode He exercised the ministry of healing at Simon Peter’s house: “So He stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. And immediately she arose and served them.” (Luke 4:39) He delegated this ministry of healing with the twelve: “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.” (Mt 10:8) Healing confirmed God’s personal presence and the authorisation of His servants and the proclamation of the rule of God. The ministry of healing accelerated the spread of the era of God’s mercy and invited them to be the partakers of His Kingdom privilege of healing and wholeness.
