But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. Acts 9:27

Recognition is Needed

One of the common needs of any human being is the need for getting approval, understanding, recognition, support and encouragement. Nothing can substitute this need, except for empathy from the other person or being vouched for by a group or community. Paul was no exception to this, and after his encounter with the Risen Lord and having been immersed in an experience that was totally strange, new and unexplainable, he needed an immediate approval and support from the apostolic community, which had fear and suspicion about Paul’s new claim, due to the past that was attached to him. So it was Barnabas who had the courage to extend kindness and listening that developed into a communion, by which he requested the apostles to extend understanding, approval and recognition that Paul needed: “But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. And he declared to them how he had seen the Lord on the road, and that He had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus.” (Acts 9:27) Let nothing and no-one hinder us from providing any of the children of God or His ministers with their need for recognition, approval and encouragement, so that their vocation may be confirmed and consequently their ministry spread in serving the Lord’s kingdom.

Abba, Thank You for making us realize others’ need for recognition, support and encouragement. Let Your Spirit give us enough strength and generosity to extend to anyone who is in need of our encouragement, in Jesus’ Most Supporting Name, Amen.
